booking form

Details
These comprehensive presentations will be held in the workshop area immediately after each workshop closes for the day at 5pm. There is a nominal charge that covers the package of presentations - attend as many or as few as you wish.

Cost: $25.00 USD (about £12.50) to include all presentations.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - SESSION 1
Date : Tuesday June 10th - 5pm
Time : approximately 90 minutes

Film Speed : The discussion will focus on ISO and its previous relation to film speed. This is most practically discussed as relating to different subjects: landscape, wildlife, sports, etc., along with various lighting conditions. Digital photography created a fundamental change in how ISO is used and is one of the fundamental decisions that a photographer makes in establishing a "shooting triangle" (more about this later in the discussion).

Aperture : In order to understand aperture, it is important to place it within the framework of focal length and depth of field. This will be simplified by covering wide angle, normal, and telephoto shooting, and how to create the appropriate depth of field. The discussion will also differentiate between digital SLR cameras and point-and-shoot cameras and how chip size affects the depth of field with each system. Pros and cons are presented for each system as it relates to various subjects and goals in shooting.

Shutter Speed : A short discussion to present some rules of thumb on what shutter speeds are required to freeze various types of action. Also included is a discussion of Image Stabilization and its effects on improving unsupported (no tripod) photography.

Shooting Triangle : This is fundamental to understanding the tradeoffs required in photography. By viewing ISO, aperture, and shutter speed as three legs of a stool, decisions can be made that improve practical shooting results. For example, landscape photography is not speed-sensitive, so aperture becomes the critical aspect along with ISO, action-based photography is speed-sensitive and sometimes requires a sacrifice in depth-of- field or digital noise in order to get the shot. The primary goal is to present a cost-benefit of different shooting modes and how to make predictable sacrifices to ensure the greatest potential of success. We'll discuss the importance of these three components in shooting at the Discovery Center.

DIGITAL IMAGING WORKFLOW
Date : Wednesday June 11th - 5pm
Time : approximately 60 minutes

PRINTING : This live demonstration will cover the steps involved in creating a print-ready digital version of a drawing. Starting with an overview of scanning technology, the presentation will cover the process used to stitch multi-sampled scans into a seamless image, the use of non-destructive masks and adjustment layers to modify the raw scan, and the use of unsharp masking to produce a final print-ready master image. A digital imaging workflow will be presented along with in-class discussions on the various techniques used to produce top-quality results.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - SESSION 2
Date : Thursday June 12th - 5pm
Time : approximately 60 minutes

RESULTS : A follow-up session to discuss results obtained from the Grizzly & Wolf Discover Center that focuses on evaluating photos, with some information on digital photo development. Bring along your photos from the Grizzly & Wolf Center for an in-depth discussion on what went right and what could be improved.

RAW versus JPG : Finally, the discussion will cover the advantages of shooting RAW format, for those interested in advanced digital development. RAW offers far greater flexibility and reliability than the JPG format. A demonstration will present the differences and show the basic RAW development process. I will attempt to cover the interpretation of histograms, the use of levels, saturation, sharpening, and pixel-level analysis of in-the-field results.
